At VQS Fire, we provide emergency lighting testing Sydney building owners, strata managers and facility managers can rely on. Our technicians test emergency lights and illuminated exit signs, confirm each fitting runs on battery power for the required duration, repair or replace failed fittings and record the results for your building’s compliance records.
Emergency and exit lighting works alongside alarm and detection systems that warn occupants early and passive measures that keep fire and smoke contained, helping people find their way out safely when the power fails.
VQS Fire is trusted across Sydney for dependable scheduling, practical advice and clear communication. Our Google reviews reflect our focus on responsive service, organised delivery and documentation that helps clients understand what has been checked and whether any follow-up action is needed.

Emergency lights and exit signs only help if they switch on and stay on when mains power is lost. Our testing goes beyond a quick look at each fitting, following a structured process that confirms battery performance, illumination and signage so faults are found before an emergency, not during one.
Each emergency light and exit sign is switched to battery power and checked to confirm it stays illuminated for at least the 90-minute duration required under AS/NZS 2293.2, the standard AS 1851 refers to for emergency lighting maintenance. Fittings that dim, flicker or fail early are flagged, as a weak or ageing battery is one of the most common reasons emergency lighting fails when it is needed.
Exit signs need to be clearly visible, correctly orientated and free from obstructions so occupants can follow them to safety. We check that each sign is illuminated, legible and pointing the right way, and that nothing such as stock, partitions or a new fit-out is blocking the view. These checks can be coordinated with portable fire extinguisher servicing and tagging and routine fire hose reel testing during the same visit.
We inspect each fitting for physical damage, missing or discoloured diffusers and faulty charge indicators, and confirm lamps operate correctly in both normal and emergency mode. Where a battery, lamp or emergency fitting has failed, our technicians can repair or replace it on the existing circuit, so most faults are resolved without bringing in another contractor.
Every test is recorded in the building’s emergency lighting log book or service records, including the date, results and the location of any failed fittings. These records support your Annual Fire Safety Statement and can be combined with condition assessments for other installed fire safety equipment across the property.
Our ISO-aligned systems support consistent quality management, safe work practices and organised operational processes. For emergency lighting testing clients, this means clearer service delivery, stronger accountability and records that are easier to manage.

As members of Fire Protection Association Australia, we remain connected to recognised fire industry guidance and best practice. This supports our approach to emergency and exit light testing, equipment maintenance and broader fire protection compliance.

Our Master Builders Association membership supports professional coordination across active buildings, construction sites and refurbishment projects. This is particularly valuable where emergency lighting testing must be completed around tenants, trades, restricted access or live building operations.

Our Civil Contractors Federation membership reflects disciplined risk management and structured site practices in complex environments. For industrial, infrastructure and high-activity Sydney properties, this supports a more controlled and dependable testing process.

Emergency lighting testing should be supported by consistent processes, careful documentation and a strong understanding of wider fire safety obligations. VQS Fire operates under recognised systems and maintains industry memberships that reinforce our commitment to quality, safety and accountable service delivery across Sydney.
We support commercial, industrial, strata and mixed-use buildings, as well as apartment common areas where residential fire protection planning and maintenance may include emergency lighting, exit signs, alarms and fire doors.
Every building has a different number of emergency lights and exit signs spread across stairwells, corridors, car parks and plant rooms. Our process keeps emergency lighting testing simple by confirming what is installed, testing each fitting methodically, recording the results and helping you plan any follow-up work.
1
We start by locating every emergency light and exit sign on site and reviewing your fire safety schedule and previous log book entries. This confirms the standard your building is maintained to, which is usually AS/NZS 2293.2 as referenced in AS 1851, and whether any earlier faults are still outstanding.
2
Fittings are switched to battery power for the full discharge test while our technicians check illumination, exit sign visibility, charge indicators and the physical condition of each unit. Testing is planned around tenants and trading hours to keep disruption to a minimum.
3
Any fitting that fails, dims early or is damaged is documented with its location and a clear recommendation. Failed batteries, lamps and fittings on existing circuits can usually be replaced by our technicians on the same visit or a scheduled return visit, then retested to confirm they meet the required duration. Other exit path measures, such as compliant fire-rated doors, can be reviewed at the same time.
4
Once testing is complete, we update your log book or provide a written report showing what was tested, the results and what needs attention. Emergency lighting testing can also be built into scheduled inspection programs for multiple fire safety systems, so every six-monthly visit is booked in advance.
